Tuesday November 10
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
President Clayton Rose is joined by journalist, author, and educator Alvin Hall '74, to talk about his 2,000-mile road trip from Detroit to New Orleans on a route informed by the historic travel guide The Negro Motorist Green Book, which for thirty years provided African Americans with advice on safe places to eat and sleep when they traveled through the Jim Crow-era United States. It was one of the most evil times in our country, with many southern states enforcing racial segregation. Interviews conducted by Hall along the way resulted in the podcast Driving the Green Book, with stories and memories of that time of navigating trips, patronizing Black-owned businesses, and coming together in the face of institutionalized racism.
