Alumni Council
Since 1914, the Alumni Council has acted as a conduit between the Alumni Association and the College.
2012-13 Slate of New Members
Bowdoin welcomes nominations to the Alumni Council from staff, faculty, trustees, and alumni. The Council’s Nominations Committee reviews nominations and proposes a slate of eight people each year, representing seven decades or at-large positions. The 2012-13 slate of new members has been approved by the full Council and is presented to you below, with brief biographical sketches.
Sydney Asbury ’03 was a Government and Sociology major at Bowdoin. Sydney is currently working as a Vice President at Northwind Strategies, a political consulting and public relations firm in Boston. Prior to her role with Northwind, Sydney worked for Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Sydney served in a variety of roles for Governor Patrick, including as his Deputy Chief of Staff, and Campaign Manager to his 2010 re-election campaign. Sydney lives in Boston, Massachusetts with her husband Michael Farrell '01 and son Dylan.
Kayla Baker ’09 was an Economics major at Bowdoin. She is currently the national corporate operations manager for Citizen Schools and serves as a BASIC volunteer. She lives in Somerville, Massachusetts and in her spare time enjoys biking.
Dotan Johnson (DJ) ’07 is the Manager of On-air Operations for NBC Sports Network where he is responsible for all on-air distribution and commercial integration. He graduated from Bowdoin with a major in English and a minor in Film. DJ was the General Manager of the Bowdoin Cable Network (BCN) and he led the launch of BCNews along with a group of other Polar Bears. After Bowdoin, DJ joined NBC Universal and has worked in all 4 NBC major locations across the United States – 30 Rock in NYC, Universal City, Burbank, and now Englewood Cliffs in NJ. DJ currently lives in NYC and enjoys golfing and snowboarding in his free time.
Robert Kubacki ’75 was a history major at Bowdoin College and later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. He is currently Vice President of National Account Sales at Pella Corporation in Pella, Iowa. The majority of his career has been in the building industry holding positions with Kohler Company and Delta Faucet Company prior to Pella. He has been a member of the BASIC volunteer program at Bowdoin. Bob has been married to Patrice for 38 years. They have two children Kevin and Claire and four grandchildren. Bob and Patrice reside in Pella, Iowa.
William Mason ’63 was an economics and english major at Bowdoin. He became a Naval officer upon graduation, later serving in four undergraduate admissions offices (Director of Admissions at Bowdoin), and then head of college counseling at St. Mark's School. Bill has retired to Brunswick with his wife, Jennifer. His son, Tim, graduated from St. Anselm College and has a career in sales.
William R. Matthews, Jr. ’65 majored in Latin, and earned nine varsity letters in football, hockey, and baseball, serving as co-captain of the hockey team his senior year. He went on to receive a Masters in Classics from Tufts University. He taught, coached, and served in different administrative capacities at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH for 45 years, the last six of which he was Rector, or Head of School. He was inducted into the New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006. He has three sons, one of whom, Bobby, graduated from Bowdoin in 1993. Married to Marcia, they have nine grandchildren, who are the center of their lives.
Matt Roberts ’93 is an Executive Producer and Writer for the Late Show with David Letterman, where he has worked since the program's inception on CBS in 1993. He has been nominated for 15 Emmy awards - 7 for producing and 7 for writing at the Late Show – and he won the Emmy award in 2011 for writing on the 64th Annual Tony Awards. Matt was an English major at Bowdoin, a DJ and station manager at WBOR, and a president of the Student Union Committee. Originally from Rock Island, Illinois, he now lives in New York City with his partner, Tony. The two of them return to Maine - a cabin in Otisfield - as often as possible.
Dee Spagnuolo ’96 was a Government and Spanish double major and captain of the field hockey, women's ice hockey, and softball teams. She went on to serve in the U.S. Peace Corps and to earn a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is currently a partner in Ballard Spahr LLP's White Collar/Investigations Group. She focuses her practice on conducting internal investigations and defending False Claims Act litigation and alleged Minority Business Enterprise fraud. She lives in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania with her partner, Sasha Ballen '96, and their three children, Elio (5), Marina (5), and Beau (2).
Dave Willner ’06 was an Anthropology major at Bowdoin. He currently works at Facebook, managing the global Content Policy team. He lives in Menlo Park, California with his wife Charlotte. Charlotte graduated from Bowdoin in the class of 2006 and also works at Facebook, managing the User Safety team.
